The Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) was created in 2017 by a group of asset owners and other investors who wanted to understand how companies were managing the transition to a low carbon economy.
The premise behind TPI is to provide academically robust and independent assessments of how companies are transitioning in line with the Paris Agreement. Our assessments are based on public disclosures and detailed and transparent methodologies. The outputs of TPI assessments are open access.
Since then, TPI has expanded to cover not only companies but also banks and issuers of sovereign debt. Now a global initiative with over 150 investor supporters and more than $80 trillion in assets under management and advisement. In response to our continued growth, TPI Limited was established in 2021, and in 2022 we were delighted to support the launch of the TPI Centre (our academic partner).
Transition Pathway Initiative Limited
TPI Ltd is the owner of the TPI Brand, and provides the voice of investors, supports the TPI Centre and ensures their research meets investor needs. TPI Ltd also works to secure funding for the TPI Centre and increase the profile of TPI’s work, both in the investor community and the wider financial ecosystem. TPI Ltd works closely with the TPI Centre but has its own governance structure, details of which can be found below. It is funded by a group of asset owners and our Research Funding Partners (investment managers). These resources are used to fund the activities of TPI Ltd and support the research of the TPI Centre.
What does TPI do?
TPI provides open access data that supports investors in understanding the climate transition.
The data are used by investors in several ways including enabling them to make better informed decisions as to how companies are transitioning and act as stewards of their assets, voting on and engaging with companies to encourage the transition.
TPI is also proud to work with Climate Action 100+, providing data that goes into their net zero benchmark.
Further information on how investors use TPI data can be found in a selection of case studies.
You can also learn more about TPI in a series of short videos available on our YouTube channel.
Our why
Climate change is having an increasing impact on the environment, society and global capital markets, presenting a wide range of complex risks to investors and their assets: these range from physical impacts to regulation, and litigation to transition risk. Therefore, there is growing recognition among asset owners and managers of the need to consider the implications of the transition into their investment processes.
Since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, investors have been making commitments and/or setting targets to support the transition. Meeting the Paris Agreement climate goals requires systemic changes in the global economy. Investors have a critical role to play in this transition, and TPI provides tools to aide them in supporting global markets to transition to net zero.
